Complex partial seizure not responding to Zenoxa (Oxcarbazepine)
Question : - I m 21yr old taking Zenoxa od 300 for complex partial seizure for 3 months but i have no cure..wat can i do’?
Answer
This could be due to two problems.
- Problems in the initial diagnosis
- Drug is not working for you or the dose is inadequate for you.
If you have undergone EEG, CT, MRI scans and seen by a qualified neurologist then the diagnosis may be correct. But you did not submit the history of your problem e.g. How long you are getting these seizures, How you get them, What side of the body affected during the seizure, symptoms before and after the seizure. Therefore, I may not be able to help in the diagnosis.
If your problem is due to drug not being working then doctors increases the current medication to tolerable maximum. If the seizures are not controlled by maximum tolerable dose then the drug needs to be changed. It is usually changed by cross titration (Cross-titration involves gradually discontinuing the current drug while gradually escalating the dosage of the new drug.)
Maximum dose of Zenoxa or Oxcarbazepine is 2.4g per day in divided doses. Therefore, your current medication can be increased.
Other common drugs that are used for complex partial seizures are
Lamotrigine
Carbamazepine
Oxcarbazepine
Phenytoin
Levetiracetam
However, above decisions should be taken by your doctor. This answer prepares you for the treatment change.
